Het lossen van ‘loose loaded’ containers is fysiek zwaar, tijdrovend en onaantrekkelijk werk. De dozen moeten stuk voor stuk handmatig uit de containers worden gehaald en op pallets worden gestapeld. Dat leidt tot fysieke klachten bij het personeel en tot schade aan goederen als dozen vallen of slordig worden gestapeld. Het intuïtief vormgegeven bedieningspaneel toont de stapelpatronen en geeft aan welk stapelpatroon de voorkeur verdient. De keuze van de operator wordt in het geheugen vastgelegd, zodat de volgende keer automatisch het juiste stapelpatroon wordt geselecteerd. Het lossen van containers was nog nooit zo gemakkelijk.

Minimale kans op productschade

 Met een nieuwe entresolvloer is DeltaStar Nutrients erin geslaagd de orderpickcapaciteit flink uit te breiden. De onbetwiste eyecatcher in het Venlose magazijn is de Prorunner mk5 van Qimarox, die kunststof bakken van de entresolvloer naar de begane grond transporteert. System integrator Eslogic heeft deze verticale transporteur in slechts drie dagen geïnstalleerd en geïntegreerd. Peter Gatzen van DeltaStar is blij met de aanschaf. “Dit is een betrouwbaar, doeltreffend en eenvoudig systeem dat perfect past in onze operatie.”

 In 1994 was DeltaStar Nutrients een van de eerste pioniers in voedingssupplementen. De groothandel startte met het importeren van hoogwaardige voedingssupplementen van Amerikaanse merken als Natures Plus en Allergy Research Group. “Inmiddels beschikken we over een assortiment van bijna duizend artikelen, waaronder een eigen productlijn met de naam Vitaplex. We leveren aan artsen, therapeuten en hun patiënten in alle Duitstalige landen en de Benelux”, vertelt Peter Gatzen, CEO van DeltaStar.

 In 2019 verhuisde de groothandel naar een nieuw pand op de Brightlands Campus in Venlo. Het oude magazijn was te klein geworden en voldeed niet meer aan de eisen van deze tijd. “Hier zitten we in een omgeving met kennisinstellingen, onderzoekslaboratoria en bedrijven op het gebied van voeding en gezondheid. Dat nodigt uit tot samenwerking. Bovendien hebben we nu een representatief pand waar we graag artsen en therapeuten ontvangen”, verklaart Gatzen.

 Meer capaciteit met extra verdieping

In het nieuwe magazijn lopen de orderpickers met karren langs de legbordstellingen om de bestelde producten te verzamelen in kunststof bakken. Voor het transport van de bakken naar de inpakafdeling heeft DeltaStar de hulp van Eslogic ingeschakeld. Deze system integrator heeft in de zomer van 2019 een eenvoudig maar doeltreffend systeem met een rollenbaan en zes inpaktafels geïnstalleerd.

 Nog geen jaar na de ingebruikname moest DeltaStar alweer op zoek naar uitbreiding van de orderpickcapaciteit. De reden was de snelle groei en de toename van het aantal stock keeping units (SKU’s). “We hebben besloten een extra verdieping te creëren door de bouw van een entresolvloer”, legt Gatzen uit. “Dat leidde tot een nieuwe uitdaging: het verticaal transport van de kunststof bakken van de entresolvloer naar de begane grond. Hiervoor hebben we opnieuw Eslogic om hulp gevraagd.”

 Veel minder ruimtebeslag

Eslogic heeft verschillende opties in kaart gebracht, waaronder rollenbanen en bandtransporteurs. Die hebben als nadeel dat het hoogteverschil alleen met een kleine hellingshoek kan worden overbrugd. “Dat betekent dat een rollenbaan of bandtransporteur relatief veel ruimte in beslag neemt. Daarom ging de voorkeur uit naar een goederenlift. De investeringskosten zijn hoger, maar het ruimtebeslag veel minder”, vertelt Paul Zeebregts, eigenaar van Eslogic.

 De keuze viel op de Prorunner mk5 van Qimarox. Deze verticale conveyor bestaat uit meerdere productdragers die een omloop maken volgens het paternoster-principe. De productdragers pakken de kunststof bakken op van een rollenbaan op de entresolvloer en zetten die weer af op een rollenbaan op de begane grond. Vervolgens kunnen de bakken twee kanten op: richting de legbordstellingen voor de ontbrekende producten of rechtstreeks naar de inpaktafels.

 Echte eyecatcher

Voordat de keuze werd gemaakt, hebben Eslogic en DeltaStar samen een bezoek gebracht aan het democentrum van Qimarox in Harderwijk. Daar raakten ze snel overtuigd. “We hadden een conventionele productlift kunnen inzetten, maar dit is een elegant en eenvoudig systeem met vergelijkbare investeringskosten”, vertelt Zeebregts, die bijval krijgt van Gatzen. “De Prorunner mk5 is een echte eyecatcher in ons magazijn. Dat is belangrijk, want wij willen kwaliteit uitstralen, ook in de logistiek.”

 De Prorunner mk5 van DeltaStar is 5,20 meter hoog. Het eerste ontwerp telde twee productdragers, maar met het oog op de groei is dat uitgebreid tot vijf. Daardoor kan de verticale transporteur maar liefst 1200 kunststof bakken per uur verplaatsen, veel meer dan de capaciteit die de Venlose groothandel op dit moment nodig heeft. “Maar het gaat ons niet om de capaciteit”, stelt Gatzen. “Het belangrijkste is dat we een betrouwbaar, doeltreffend en in essentie eenvoudig systeem hebben dat perfect past in onze operatie en onze filosofie.”

 Conform planning en begroting

Voor Eslogic betekende de installatie van de Prorunner mk5 de eerste samenwerking met Qimarox. Die samenwerking is uitstekend bevallen en verlopen conform planning en begroting zonder tegenvallers. “De transporteur is op tijd geleverd en was binnen drie dagen gebruiksklaar. De machine beschikt over slechts één elektromotor en ingebouwde, bekabelde sensoren met één aansluitingspunt. Aansluiting op de besturingskast was snel en eenvoudig”, legt Zeebregts uit.

 De door Eslogic ontwikkelde besturingssoftware zorgt ervoor dat de transporteur van Qimarox en de rollenbanen voor in- en uitvoer van bakken perfect met elkaar samenwerken. “We hebben de besturing zo ontworpen dat de transporteur automatisch stopt als er even geen aanvoer is. Daardoor wordt geen onnodig energie verspild”, zegt Zeebregts. Dat spreekt Gatzen bijzonder aan. “Wij zitten hier in een energieneutraal pand zonder gasaansluiting en met zonnepanelen. Duurzaam omgaan met grondstoffen en energie staat hoog op ons prioriteitenlijstje.” Een ander voordeel van de lift is dat de lift werkt volgens het paternoster principe, dat houdt in dat de (lege) lift zelf altijd in evenwicht is daardoor wordt er alleen energie verbruikt voor het heffen van het product. Hierdoor kan een relatief kleine aandrijving volstaan voor het heffen van meerdere productdragers.

 Concurrerende prijs

De Prorunner mk5 werkt uitstekend. De betrouwbaarheid is erg hoog, storingen komen vrijwel niet voor. Bijkomend voordeel: de verticale transporteur maakt weinig geluid, wat wel zo fijn is voor de orderpickers op de werkvloer. “Het is een standaard oplossing met bewezen technologie en een concurrerende prijs van een leverancier met veel ervaring”, benadrukt Zeebregts. Gatzen: “Ik ben er trots op dat we deze verticale transporteur in ons magazijn hebben staan. Dit is een oplossing waarmee ook veel andere bedrijven hun efficiëntie flink kunnen verbeteren.”

DeltaStar increases order-picking capacity with Qimarox vertical conveyor

 

DeltaStar Nutrients has successfully expanded its order picking capacity with a new mezzanine floor. The undisputed eye-catcher in the Venlo warehouse is the Prorunner mk5 from Qimarox, which transports plastic containers from the mezzanine to the ground floor. System integrator Eslogic installed and integrated this vertical conveyor in just three days. Peter Gatzen of DeltaStar is happy with the purchase. “This is a reliable, simple and clear system that fits perfectly into our business operations.”

 In 1994, DeltaStar Nutrients was one of the first pioneers in nutritional supplements. The company began importing high-quality nutritional supplements from American brands such as Natures Plus and Allergy Research Group. “We now offer an assortment of almost a thousand products, including our own product line Vitaplex. We supply doctors, therapists and their patients in all German-speaking countries and the Benelux,” says Peter Gatzen, CEO of DeltaStar.

 In 2019, the wholesaler moved to new premises on the Brightlands Campus in Venlo. The old warehouse had become too small and no longer met today's requirements. “Our new accommodation is located in an environment with knowledge institutions, research laboratories and companies that specializes in the field of nutrition and health. That invites collaboration. In addition, we now have a representative building in which we are happy to receive doctors and therapists”, explains Gatzen.

 More capacity with an extra floor

In the new warehouse, order pickers walk along the products with carts to collect them in plastic containers. DeltaStar has asked the help of Eslogic for the transport of the containers to the packing department. In the summer of 2019, this system integrator installed a simple but effective system with a roller conveyor and six packing tables.

 Less than a year after commissioning, DeltaStar was once again looking to expand its order picking capacity. The reason was the rapid growth and increase in the number of Stock Keeping Units (SKUs). “We decided to create an extra floor by building a mezzanine,” explains Gatzen. “This includes a new challenge: vertically transporting the plastic containers from the mezzanine to the ground floor. We have again asked Eslogic for help.”

 Much less space occupied

Eslogic has mapped out various options, including roller conveyors and belt conveyors. These have the disadvantage that the difference in height can only be bridged with a small angle of inclination. This means that a roller conveyor or a belt conveyor takes up a lot of space. That is why a vertical product lift was preferred. The investment costs are higher, but the space required is much less,” explains Paul Zeebregts, owner of Eslogic.

 The choice was made to use a Prorunner mk5 from Qimarox. This vertical conveyor consists of several forks (product carriers) that circulate according to the paternoster principle. The forks pick up the plastic containers from a roller conveyor on the mezzanine floor and deposit them on a roller conveyor on the ground floor. The container can then go in two directions: towards the racks for the missing products or directly to the packing tables.

 Real eye-catcher

Before the choice was made, Eslogic and DeltaStar visited the Qimarox Headquarters in Harderwijk together to have a demo presentation. They were quickly convinced once they saw the Prorunner mk5. “We could also have used a conventional product lift, but this is an elegant and simple system with comparable investment costs,” says Zeebregts, who is supported by Gatzen. “The Prorunner mk5 is a real eye-catcher in our warehouse. That is important, because we want to emanate quality, also in logistics.”

 The Prorunner mk5 from DeltaStar is 5.20 meters high. The first design had two product carriers, but has been expanded to five for expected growth in the future. By expanding it from two to five, the vertical conveyor can handle as many as 1200 plastic containers per hour, much more than the capacity that the Venlo wholesaler needs at the moment. “The capacity is not the most important aspect for us,” says Gatzen. "The most important thing is that we have a reliable, effective and simple system that fits perfectly within our operation and our philosophy."

 In accordance with planning and budget

For Eslogic, the installation of the Prorunner mk5 marked the first collaboration with Qimarox. The collaboration went very well and went according to plan and budget without any setbacks. “The Prorunner mk5 was delivered on time and was ready for use within three days. The machine has only one electric motor and built-in, wired sensors with one connection point. Making the connection to the control cabinet was quick and easy,” explains Zeebregts.

 The by Eslogic developed control software ensures that the Qimarox Prorunner mk5 and the roller conveyors for the infeed and outfeed of containers work together perfectly. “We have designed the controls in such a way that the conveyor automatically stops if there is no product infeed for a while. As a result, no unnecessary energy is wasted,” says Zeebregts. That particularly appeals to Gatzen. “We are here in an energy-neutral building without a gas connection and with solar panels. Sustainable use of raw materials and energy is high on our priority list.” Another advantage of the product lift is that the lift works according to the paternoster principle, which means that the (empty) lift itself is always in balance, so energy is only used for lifting the product. As a result, a relatively small drive can suffice for lifting several product carriers.

 Competitive price

The Prorunner mk5 works excellent. The reliability of the machine is very high, malfunctions are almost non-existent. An additional advantage: the vertical conveyor makes little noise, which is great for the order pickers on the work floor. “It is a standard solution with proven technology and a competitive price from a supplier with a lot of experience,” emphasizes Zeebregts. Gatzen: “I am proud to have this vertical conveyor in our warehouse. This is a solution that many other companies can use to improve their efficiency.”

Compacte, ruimtebesparende schakelkasten en maar twee kabels voor communicatie en voeding gaven deze klant de mogelijkheid om eenvoudig en met minder ruimte de nieuw geleverde aandrijvingen snel in gebruik te nemen. Bij toeval kende de machineleverancier de decentrale technieken en producten van SEW-EURODRIVE. Hij gebruikt die zelf al jaren waardoor het bedrijf snel ontwerpt, opbouwt, test, afbreekt en levert.

Legoblokken

Berry Jansen, software engineer bij R&D, werkt al 15 jaar bij Qimarox en hij nam het hele maakproces van het bedrijf onder de loep, met speciale aandacht voor standaardisatie en het maken van modulaire en herbruikbare producten. “We willen modulair bouwen en zo de herbruikbaarheid van systeemcomponenten vergroten en de doorlooptijd verkorten. Vandaar dat decentrale techniek voor ons interessant is. Deze past in onze strategie om met ‘legoblokken’ een systeem op te bouwen. De klant wil de ontbrekende legoblokjes van ons krijgen.” Die levert Qimarox dus met haar modules. “Met ons brede productengamma kunnen we samen met onze partners (OEM’ers en system integrators) elke eindgebruiker – overal ter wereld – bereiken en bedienen. Vanwege de standaardisatie van al onze producten kan er altijd snel – klantspecifiek – een machine worden geconfigureerd. En onze partners hoeven zelf niets te ontwikkelen.”

De voordelen van decentrale techniek

“Wat in de schakelkast zit, is nu praktisch altijd hetzelfde”, aldus Jansen. “Dan wordt deze dus een vast kostenplaatje, verloopt het calculeren sneller en blijft het overzichtelijk voor klanten. Dat is niet het enige voordeel. Beter testen is mogelijk aangezien de ‘legoblokken’ al compleet bedraad zijn en deze modules zonder schakelkast getest kunnen worden. Dat bespaart tijd in de opstartfase. Daarnaast is de leercurve voor integrators is ook lager, want ze krijgen een complete set. Ze hoeven – kort door de bocht gezegd – alleen nog maar de scope van bijvoorbeeld afmeting en gewicht, of de overbrengingsverhouding in te stellen. Ook het uitwisselen van onderdelen is gemakkelijker.”

En dit is nog niet alles. De schakelkast is doorgaans qua grootte nog maar een vierde van de grootte van de schakelkast bij centrale installaties, ca. 1 m breed in plaats van doorgaans 4 tot 5 m. Jansen: “En we kunnen gemiddeld zo’n 75% aan kabels besparen. Voor de palletiser hebben we nu nog maar 10 kabels nodig in plaats van 40. Dit levert forse besparingen op in installatie-uren en in kabelmateriaal, vooral als het om afgeschermde kabels gaat, met het oog op elektromagnetische compatibiliteit.

Samenwerking met SEW-EURODRIVE

De samenwerking met SEW-EURODRIVE dateert vanaf het begin. Jansen: “De eerste machines die wij fabriceerden, waren uitgerust met aandrijvingen van SEW. Door de goede service en het actief meedenken in oplossingen binnen onze branche heeft SEW zich bewezen als betrouwbare partner. Omdat Qimarox wereldwijd levert, is het belangrijk dat een partner als SEW dat ook doet en kan ondersteunen wanneer nodig.”

De decentrale techniek is niet door SEW-EURODRIVE uitgevonden, maar SEW heeft dankzij jaren ervaring en uitgebreide kennis producten ontwikkeld waarmee machinebouwers en fabrikanten steeds sneller en goedkoper productielijnen kunnen maken.

Lowrunner LR3

Een bekend product is de Lowrunner LR3, een compacte palletiseercel die een grote verscheidenheid aan producten kan verwerken. Door de unieke manier van laag-formeren – het plaatsen van producten in een laag – kunnen nagenoeg alle patronen worden gemaakt. De machine stelt zichzelf volledig automatisch in. Door middel van HMI (human-machine-interface) kunnen ook bestaande patronen worden aangepast. Maar de gebruiker kan ook volledig nieuwe patronen aanmaken door eenvoudig de productmaten in te geven waarna de software een aantal patronen genereert. De gebruiker kiest zijn voorkeurpatroon en de machine gaat vervolgens de producten conform dit patroon verwerken. Allemaal zonder tussenkomst van een programmeur.

Ambities

Qimarox heeft grote ambities. Het bedrijf wil als marktleider de groei op het gebied van vertikaaltransporteurs voortzetten en het marktaandeel voor palletizers flink vergroten.

  

Jansen: “Verder blijven we werken aan verbreding van ons productportfolio. Sleutelbegrippen hierbij zijn innovatie, standaardisering, verbeteringen in de breedte, breder inzetbare machines en capaciteitsvergroting om meer toegevoegde waarde te kunnen bieden, met name in de intralogistiek. Door standaardisatie is voor de gebruiker de kwaliteit geborgd en zijn onze producten overal ter wereld beschikbaar voor de beste prijs. Samenwerking met lokale integratiepartners zorgt voor de gewenste ondersteuning.”

Recently SEW-EURODRIVE interviewed one of our engineers. Read the result of the interview below.

Compact, space-saving control cabinets and only two cables for communication and power supply gave this customer the possibility to quickly commission the newly delivered drives with less space. By chance, the machine supplier was aware of SEW-EURODRIVE's decentralized technologies and products. Qimarox has been using these himself for years, allowing the company to design, build, test, de-install, and deliver quickly.

Lego blocks    

Berry Jansen, a software engineer at R&D, has been working at Qimarox for 15 years and he examined the entire manufacturing process of the company, with a special focus on standardization and making modular and reusable products. “We want to build modularly, increasing the reusability of system components and reducing lead times. Hence, decentralized technology is of interest to us. This fits in with our strategy to build a system with 'Lego blocks'. The customer wants to get the missing Lego blocks from us.” Qimarox, therefore, supplies them with its modules. “With our broad product range, together with our partners (OEMs and system integrators) we can reach and serve every end-user - anywhere in the world. Because of the standardization of all our products, a machine can always be configured quickly - customer-specific. And our partners don't have to develop anything themselves.”

The advantages of decentralized technology

“What's in the control cabinet is now practically always the same,” says Jansen. “Then it becomes a fixed cost, the calculation is faster and it remains clear and simple for customers. That's not the only advantage. Better testing is possible since the 'Lego blocks' are already completely wired and these modules can be tested without a control cabinet. This saves time in the start-up phase. In addition, the learning curve for integrators is also lower, because they get a complete set. In short, they only need to set the scope of size and weight or the transmission ratio. Also, exchanging parts is easier."

And this is not all. In terms of size, the control cabinet is only a quarter of the size of the control cabinet in central installations, about 1 m wide instead of 4 to 5 m. Jansen: “And we can save an average of 75% on cables. For the palletizer, we now only need 10 cables instead of 40. This results in substantial savings in installation hours and cable material, especially when it comes to shielded cables, also in context of the electromagnetic compatibility.

Cooperation with SEW-EURODRIVE

The cooperation with SEW-EURODRIVE dates back to the beginning. Jansen: “The first machines we manufactured were equipped with SEW drives. SEW has proven itself as a reliable partner due to the good service and active thinking about solutions within our sector. Since Qimarox delivers worldwide, it is important that a partner like SEW does the same and can support when needed."

Decentralized technology was not invented by SEW-EURODRIVE, but SEW, thanks to years of experience and extensive knowledge, has developed products that allow machine builders and manufacturers to make production lines ever faster and cheaper.

Lowrunner LR3

A well-known product is the Lowrunner LR3, a compact palletizing cell that can handle a wide variety of products. Because of the unique way of layer-forming - placing products in a layer - almost all patterns can be made. The machine sets itself up fully automatically. Existing patterns can also be modified through HMI (human-machine interface). But the user can also create completely new patterns by simply entering the product dimensions after which the software generates several patterns. The user chooses his preferred pattern and the machine will then process the products according to this pattern. All is done without the intervention of a programmer.

Ambitions

Qimarox has great ambitions. As the market leader, the company intends to continue its growth in the field of vertical conveyors and significantly increase its market share for palletizers.
